Genetic tests and life insurance

  • From 8 October 2026, life insurers may not use protected genetic information in life insurance underwriting, with limited consent-based exceptions (Treasury Laws Amendment (Genetic Testing Protections in Life Insurance and Other Measures) Act 2026).
  • The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) classes consumer-requested tests as higher-risk diagnostic self-tests. Tests through accredited Australian laboratories with professional sample collection operate within Australian regulation. RCPA strongly opposes international direct-to-consumer test kits for medical purposes, which have no Australian regulatory oversight (position statement, April 2026).

How these figures are calculated

  • Prices are recorded from provider websites with the page address and the date each was observed.
  • Each business counts once: its lowest single starting, fixed or range price for genetic health test at any of its locations in the area. A chain with many locations counts once.
  • Per unit, per area, course, package and consultation prices, and amounts flagged as implausible, are excluded.
  • A cost page is published only when at least 10 businesses are in the sample. The sample is the businesses in the directory that publish a price online, not the whole market.
  • A starting price is the lowest advertised entry price. It is not a quote and not the cost of a course.

Prices are figures published on business websites on the date shown. They may exclude consultation and other fees and may have changed. Prices are not shown for services that involve prescription or unapproved medicines. Medicare rebates apply only where an MBS item and its criteria are met. longevity.com.au does not sell or book services.
